ASI’s history is rooted in Madison College, an Adventist self-
supporting institution established in 1904 near Nashville,
Tennessee by E.A. Sutherland and Percy Magan. As Madison
expanded it began to plant satellite schools and institutions
around the country. In 1947 these self-supporting entities
formed the Association of Seventh-day Adventist Self-
Supporting Institutions, or ASI. At the time, ASI members
were educational or health outfits
Over the years however, ASI membership began to include
businesses and Adventist entrepreneurs and professionals.
Thus in 1979, to better reflect ASI’s diverse membership, the
organization’s name was changed to Adventist-laymen’s
Services & Industries.
For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight
wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner
he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he
may give to him that is good before God.
Eccl 2:26
Adventist-laymen's Services and Industries (ASI)
is an organization of Seventh-day Adventist
church members who work in the private sector
in business and professional vocations.
ASI’s philosophy promotes a Christ-centered
lifestyle, manifested by a commitment to be in
daily partnership with God. Members seek to live
out God's love in their own lives and share that
love with the people they encounter in their
business and professional activities -- hence the
motto,
Sharing Christ in the Marketplace.
ASI - The organization of Seventh-day Adventist lay persons
involved in professions, industry, education, and/or services --
exists to provide challenge, nurture and experience in Sharing
Christ in the Marketplace as well as support the global mission
of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Why do
ASI exist?
To be a liaison between the supporting
ministries, businesses and professionals
and the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
To inspire the lay person to engage in
evangelism
To provide a place of network and nurture
for the ministry, business, and professionals
of the Seventh-day Adventist Church
To assist with development of projects in
health, education, evangelism, community
services, or family concerns
ASI and its members will be known for their:
Unswerving honesty in business principles and practices,
Unflagging participation in various Church ministries,
Unwavering positiveness toward Church leadership,
Unhesitating provision for the needs of others, and
Untiring focus on Christ they represent in the marketplace.
Time, talents, treasures and the body temple are
recognized as belonging to God. We are stewards of
these possessions. Accordingly, we believe that our
vocations can and should be a ministry to aid in the
advancement of the great gospel commission
(Luke 19:13; Testimonies Vol. 4, p. 469).
1
ASI is committed to supporting the Seventh-day
Adventist Church and its various outreach programs
which include health, education, evangelism,
community services, family concerns and special
projects.

2. ORGANIZATIONAL membership is the primary type of ASI membership. The major emphasis of ASI is
to encourage supporting ministries and those with the entrepreneurial spirit of business operation to work
together and cooperate with the Seventh-day Adventist Church mission and ministry. Organizational membership
has the following characteristics:
a) Organizational members will have at least two full-time employees in an organization that is owned or
controlled by Seventh-day Adventist laypersons. The two qualifying employees may include the owner,
applicant, or contract or volunteer workers.
b) The organization must have been in operation for at least one full year at the time application for ASI
membership is submitted.
c) Membership will be in the name of the organization.
ASI Membership Category
3. EXECUTIVE PROFESSIONAL membership is available to a layperson, who holds an executive,
professional, or managerial level of responsibility for a company with employees, and who does not qualify
for another category of membership. The person’s primary duties must be managing the enterprise, or
managing a department or subdivision of the enterprise; they must regularly direct the work of at least two
or more other full-time employees, or their equivalent, and have the authority to hire or fire employees.
Examples of individuals who qualify for the Executive Professional membership would include an executive
officer, department manager, or managing physician of a non-member organization.
4. SOLE PROPRIETOR membership is available to a layperson who is a business owner who otherwise
qualifies for organizational membership, except that they do not have at least two qualifying employees.

work, but whose responsibilities are not executive or managerial in nature, and who does not qualify for another
category of membership Examples of individuals who qualify Personal Membership would include a physician,

responsibility in their organization.

to the ASI organization, is selected for recognition and recommended for such status by the ASI Board.

CEO of an organization who held organizational membership under Article 3.3 for five (5) years or more but sells
the business, retires, or leaves the organization; or a layperson who meets the general requirements of section

membership, but has since retired or sold their business or practice.
8. APPOINTED membership is held by individuals who have been elected by local or union conferences
within the South Asia Pacific Division (SSD) to serve as ASI secretaries or members of the ASI Board who have
been appointed by the South Asia Pacific Division ASI Nominating Committee (SSDASINC).
9. ASSOCIATE INTERNATIONAL membership is available to any organization operating outside the SSD
that has direct ties to a parent organization holding ASI membership under Article 3.3 or to organizations that
meet the criteria of Article 3.3 but are within a division or union in which there is no ASI organization. When the
union or division where the international member is located forms an ASI organization, that member should then

There are some who are especially fitted to work for
the higher classes. These should seek the Lord daily, making
it a study how to reach these persons, not to have merely a
casual acquaintance with them, but to lay hold of them
by personal effort and living faith, manifesting a
deep love for their souls, a real concern that
they shall have a knowledge of the truth as it is
in the word of God. {6T 81.1}
